A food chain shows how every living thing obtains its food. Some animals eat plants and some animals eat other animals. Producers are the ones who start the food chain, which are plants, fruits and vegetables that produce their own energy from the sun. However, the food web is able to show the appropriate representation of energy flow, since it shows interactions between different organisms.

A food web consists of many food chains and shows the different paths in which plants and animals are connected. Decomposers are the last link in the food chain and derive their energy from animals and plants that have died. The soil then becomes rich and fertile, allowing plants to grow and produce energy for a new food chain. Plants are called producers because they can use the Sun's light energy to produce food (sugar) from carbon dioxide and water.

The food chain is a linear sequence of organisms in which nutrients and energy are transferred from one organism to another. These decomposers accelerate the decay process that releases mineral salts back into the food chain, ready for plants to absorb them again and start a new food chain.
